Dr. David Salisbury Brown Mitchell, M.S., Ph.D., serves as Assistant Integral Noetic Sciences Program Director at the California Institute for Human Science (CIHS). In addition to his role at CIHS, Dr. Mitchell currently teaches in the integral transpersonal psychology concentration in the research psychology department at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), where he serves on the core faculty as assistant professor, and also as an assessment coordinator for the same department. Prior to working at CIIS, he taught on the tenure track in the psychology department at the University of West Georgia (UWG).
Dr. Mitchell’s approach to higher education focuses on cultivating community/collaboration, cognitive capacity, and contemplative insight. He is passionate about championing transdisciplinary scholarly endeavors that deal with substantive questions about human nature and potential as they relate to our past, present, and future in an expansive cosmos. Some of his endeavors relevant to these aims include a series of projects dealing with Western academic reticence to take seriously inquiry about exceptional human experiences. This trajectory includes, for example, a current book project titled Sasquatch in the Psyche: Death Anxiety, Deep Memory, and an Enduring Enigma (McFarland Press) exploring the potential psychocultural roots of stigma toward the subject of Sasquatch, and a related book chapter titled “What goes bump in the psyche: Relict hominoids as existential threats to Western culture” which was published in editor Dr. Jacob Glazier’s award-winning 2023 anthology Paranormal Ruptures: Critical Approaches to Exceptional Experiences (Beyond the Fray Publishing).
Some of Dr. Mitchell service includes being associate editor of Mindfield: The Bulletin of the Parapsychological Association where he is a regular contributor, serving as a founding member of the leadership team for the international Exceptional Experiences Empowerment (E3) Alliance, and being a member of the advisory board for the Worldwide Initiative for Super Experiencer Research (WISER).
